How to Pray for America – Today – May 7th – National Day of Prayer

How to Pray for America

Franklin Graham, 1999 & 2010 Honorary Chairman

“When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?” – Psalms 11:3

I believe our nation is in trouble today, probably more than I’ve seen in my lifetime. We are contending with issues that are causing the very foundation of our country to crumble. Our moral and spiritual roots are eroding, the economy is misleading, family life is disintegrating, and political forces are at unprecedented odds. There seem to be very few leaders who will take a stand for God and for His Word.

It can be tempting to believe that America has reached a point of no return. While these factors cause despair, we are reminded in Scripture that with God, nothing is impossible. No problem is too great for Him. Seasons of distress and uncertainty and hardship call for faithful, fervent prayer by God’s people and remind us of our responsibility to humble ourselves before Almighty God. We cannot expect healing to come to our nation apart from obedience to God through His Holy Word.

God longs for His people to humble themselves and to seek forgiveness and pray for guidance. God’s Word says, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord” (Psalm 33:12). The Bible commands that we repent of our sins and turn to Almighty God. And because we are confident that we serve a God of mercy and compassion, we know that He stands ready to respond to our cries out of the abundance of His divine wisdom.

It is a crucial time for us to individually and collectively seek God’s divine intervention for the challenges facing us. We need to pray not only for our nation, but we need to pray for our leaders, for all those who govern us, that they will turn to God with humble hearts and follow Him. Our military leaders need our prayers as we have dedicated men and women serving on battlefields and sacrificing their blood to protect our nation and many innocent people around the world. God is faithful to bless those who turn to Him.

Pray that as a nation we would return to God. As we call on God, let us do so by genuine faith, believing that He hears our prayers. God can heal this great land, for which our forefathers fought and died. We need spiritual renewal, we need a revival in America, and we need each and everyone to pray. Lord, Hear Our Cry!  – Franklin Graham

Curses and blessings

c*

Deuteronomy 27-28

Do you know the curses and blessings from these chapters of Deuteronomy?

The curses outnumber the blessings.  We often respond more to negative reinforcement than positive.  The curses included, but were not limited to disease, starvation, oppression, cannibalism, fruitlessness.

The choice between blessing and curses, life and death is ours to make. Even God’s judgments are evidence of His mercy. Life without God is empty, nothing, desolate.

God mercifully uses blessings and warning to discipline His people.

What is God using in my life to change me? What circumstance is He using to bring me closer to Him.

God does not promise material blessings.  He promises spiritual blessings of forgiveness, salvation, eternal life and peace.

Lord, I want to be closer to You day by day. Thank You for all Your blessings. I am blessed beyond measure.

Good choices

good*

Do you remember about a conversation you had with your granddaddy when you were in college? Some of us have made poor decisions and some grandfathers counseled us that there are two roads: a good road where we made responsible and good choices and the wrong road, where we made poor decisions. Some of us realized this was a pivotal time in life. Moses is telling the Israelites that they have two choices:  life or death.  Life means to be obedient to God and to love God.  Death meant turning away from God and all of His promises.

We must choose to love and obey God who is the source of all life and goodness.

Lord, help me to make good choices.

I choose to Obey God

obey*

Deuteronomy 4:44-26:19

Second Speech: Obey

Moses reviews the Ten Commandments with the people and exhorts them to obey the LORD.

Deuteronomy 6:3, “Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your ancestors, promised you.” Hear, Israel.  Listen up, you people.  This is important.  Moses knew God wanted His people to be obedient. But God wants an obedience that comes from the heart, not an obedience that is rote or duty-bound. God wants an obedience that is rooted in love. Love God with all your heart, all your soul and from that love obey God.

Love for God should inspire obedience to God.

What does my obedience or disobedience say about my love for God? How strong is my relationship with God?

Deuteronomy 6:6-9, “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.”

God’s Word and God’s commands are to be central in my life. They are to be in the forefront of our lives, our homes and our conversations.

Tips to use with child:

If the child has a test – How did you feel God’s peace?

If the child playing a soccer game – Remind him/her that the most important thing he/she can exhibit is Christ-like kindness/compassion/humility/grace to teammates.

Heartbreak: Jesus’ heart breaks every time we sin.

Disobedience: What do you think God wants you to learn?

How can I be more intentional in teaching children?

Deuteronomy  8,  exhorts  the  nation  of  Israel  to  obey  God.  Remember, remember, remember, and obey, obey, obey.

Deuteronomy 8:1, “Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today.”

Deuteronomy 8:6, “Observe the commands of the LORD your God, walking in obedience to him and revering him.”

Deuteronomy 8:11, “Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe His commands, His laws and His decrees that I am giving you this day.

Deuteronomy  9:4-5, “After  the LORD your  God  has  driven  them  out  before  you,  do  not  say  to yourself, “The LORD has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.” No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is going to drive them out before you. It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.”

Moses  reminds  the  Israelites  that  it  is  not their  righteousness  that  makes  them victorious. It is because God loves them. None of us have righteousness without Jesus Christ.

In Deuteronomy 10 and 11, Moses pleads with the people to obey God.

Deuteronomy 10:12-13, “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all  your soul, and to observe the LORD’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?

Deuteronomy 11:1  ”Love the LORD your God and keep His requirements, His decrees, His laws and His commands always.”

Deuteronomy 11:8-9, “Observe therefore all the commands I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, and so that you may livelong in the land the LORD swore to your ancestors to give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.”

Fullness of life is found in God and in obeying God. But that is a choice.

Deuteronomy 11:26-28, “See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse, the blessing if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today; the curse if you disobey the commands of the LORD your God and turn from the way that I command you today by following other gods,  which you have not known.”

Disobedience to God leads to defeat, but obedience leads to victory and blessing.

In Deuteronomy 12-13, Moses reminds the people that God, and God alone is to be worshipped in the manner in which God chooses.

In Deuteronomy 14-25, Moses tells the people how they are to love in the Promised Land.

Deuteronomy  26:16-18, “The LORD your God commands you this  day to follow these decrees and laws; carefully  observe  them  with  all  your  heart  and  with  all  your  soul. You have declared this day that the LORD is your God and that you will walk in obedience to Him; that you will keep His decrees, commands and laws; that you will listen to Him. And the LORD has declared this day that you are His people, His treasured possession as He promised, and that you are to keep all His commands.

We need to know God and obey Him. Do you feel like you are Moses for others? Are you pleading with them for the same thing?

Lord, I want to choose daily to know Your laws and Your decrees, to walk in obedience of You, to keep Your commands, to listen to You and to love You with all my heart.

Lord, please help me to know You more and to obey You gladly.

Remember God’s character

names-of-god*

Deuteronomy 1:6-4:43

First Speech: Remember

Deuteronomy 4:9, “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them fade from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.”

In  Deuteronomy  1-3,  Moses  reviews  the  history  of  Israel.  He  wants  the  people  to remember  their  failures  and  their  victories.  He  wants  them to  remember  that  their victories came about because of God.

Moses tells them to remember;   remember;   remember;   remember.

– Remember who God is

– Remember God’s character

Deuteronomy 4:32-35, “Ask now about the former days, long before your time, from the day God created human beings on the earth; ask from one end of the heavens to the other. Has anything so great as this ever happened, or has anything like it ever been heard of? Has any other people heard the voice of God[speaking out of fire, as you have, and lived? Has any god ever tried to take for himself one nation out of another nation, by testings, by signs and wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, or by great and awesome deeds, like all the things the LORD your God did for you in Egypt before your very eyes? You were shown these things so that you might know that the LORD is God; besides him there is no other.”

Remember God. Know God.

Deuteronomy 4:39-40, “Acknowledge and take to heart this day that the LORD is God in heaven above and on the earth below. There is no other. Keep his decrees and commands, which I am giving you today, so that it may go well with you and your children after you and that you may live long in the land the LORD your God gives you for all time.”

Moses tells the people these things so that they might know God and trust and obey Him.

Knowing God’s character should motivate us toward trust and obedience.

Our most important words are those that point others to God because God is Faithful, Personal, Provider, Deliverer, Just, Wise, Gracious.

Have I gotten to know God in this study of Moses? What characteristics have I learned about God? What difference has this study made in my life? Will it be the motivation to trust and obey God?

Lord, please help me to know Your character, to trust in You every day and to obey You.
