Genesis 4:17-26

Genesis 4:25, “And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.”

The Bible does not tell us where Cain found a wife. However, the Bible clearly shows that Adam and Eve had sons and daughters (Genesis 5:4). People back then lived hundreds of years. Marriage between brothers and sisters was inevitable at the beginning, for the whole human race descended from two men: Adam and Eve. Cain’s descendants were deprived of the knowledge of God by Cain’s bad behavior. The objective of the descendants of Cain was that of seeking temporary pleasures, and progress in art and farming. This was the first generation who didn’t seek God. We don’t find the name of God mentioned in this generation. Age is not mentioned either in Cain’s genealogies. We have more specific information in the pages of Scripture about the descendants of Seth. Cain’s descendants lived without God, despite their cultural achievements. These years do not matter in eternity. Without God, everything is not worth anything (John 15:5).

Cain built a city, and he named the city after his firstborn: Enoch. Lamech was a polygamist. He had two wives: Adah and Zillah. He retaliated in his arrogance. His brutality is seen in the poem he wrote. The poem trivially compares Cain’s sin to the sin of Lamech. In Cain’s descendants, we see a pattern that will be repeated a lot in history. There were highly developed civilizations: the Egyptians, the Romans, the Greeks, etc., but the precious gifts God has given to these civilizations – education, culture, arts and technology – have become the subject of their worship, a place that is only to be filled by God. All civilizations which ignore God will perish. In Proverbs 14:34 we are told, “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” How do you pray for your generation? What difference does your behavior make in the culture in which you live? How do you pray for America to be a righteous nation?

God gave Adam and Eve another seed instead of Abel: Seth’s seed. Genesis chapter 4 lists eight generations of descendants of Cain and Genesis chapter 5 lists eight generations of those who descended from Seth. Enoch is the fifth descendant of Seth and Enoch walked with God. Lamech is the fifth descendant of Cain and he was a villain. In which of the two genealogies are you, from God’s perspective? Are you in Cain’s genealogy, or in that of Seth? What do your thoughts, your faith, your actions, etc., say about the generation you follow? Have you heard God’s warning? It is not late to turn to God today and repent! Maybe tomorrow will be too late. I urge you in the Name of Jesus to repent today. Do you think that choosing to be pleasing to the Lord will bring suffering in your life? Don’t be afraid. Whomever God chooses has a future and a hope. He promised us eternal gain.
